AI-Powered Media Analysis

Students: Wesley van Gaalen

At ADS&AI, we’re proud to see our students applying their skills to real-world challenges through internships. Wesley, one of our current students, is spending his internship at the Content Intelligence Agency, where he’s diving deep into the intersection of artificial intelligence and media.

Wesley is part of a team developing tools that extract insights from TV shows, videos, and movies. His focus areas include speaker diarization, person recognition, text classification and deployment of these functionalities.

“I chose this internship because I wanted to work on challenging problems that require creative and experimental approaches,” Wesley explains. “It’s not just about building models—I’m also involved in deploying them into production, which is a valuable learning experience.”

Wesley notes that one of the most surprising parts of his internship has been the complexity of deployment.

“It’s easy to underestimate how many factors you need to consider to successfully deploy an algorithm. It’s been both challenging and insightful.”

For students preparing for internships, Wesley emphasizes the importance of early preparation and deep understanding.

“Start looking early, and make sure you truly understand the tools and concepts you’re working with. If you’ve leaned heavily on LLMs or other tools without grasping the fundamentals, you’ll likely hit roadblocks.”

Wesley found this opportunity through one of our faculty members, highlighting the value of our faculties industy connections. When asked how his education at ADS&AI prepared him for this opportunity, Wesley emphasized the importance of the problem-solving mindset:

“The ADS&AI program prepared me by teaching me how to think, how to learn, and how to solve problems. The field of AI evolves quickly, and new tools are constantly emerging—so instead of focusing just on specific technologies, the program emphasizes adaptability and independent learning. During my internship, I was even given backend development responsibilities in addition to my AI work. Although I had never used the specific backend language before, I was able to learn it quickly because of the problem-solving mindset I developed at ADS&AI. That ability to step into unfamiliar territory and still make meaningful contributions has been one of the most valuable outcomes of my education.”
