Project Management I

Course Code: Y1D4
ECTS Credits: 2.0

Course Description

This course introduces students to the core principles of Agile project management, with a focus on the Kanban methodology. Students will explore the key values and characteristics of Agile, including iterative development, adaptive planning, team autonomy and continuous improvement. Emphasis is placed on understanding how Agile differs from traditional project management, particularly in dynamic and uncertain environments like data science and software development. Through guided materials and practical exercises, students gain familiarity with core Agile practices such as daily stand-ups, retrospectives and collaborative task management.

A major component of the course involves hands-on application of these principles using a digital Kanban board tool, for example, Trello. Students will learn how to structure project backlogs and manage their team’s progress. They are expected to take ownership of their team’s Agile process, running structured stand-up meetings, documenting progress, identifying blockers, and conducting meaningful retrospectives at key points throughout the block. Supporting materials emphasize task documentation, effective communication and the development of shared team standards, such as definitions of done.

By the end of the course, students will have practical experience in managing a project through Kanban, along with a solid grasp of Agile values and ceremonies. They will be able to implement an Agile workflow within a team, maintain transparency through documentation, and reflect critically on team performance and process effectiveness. This foundation prepares them to operate effectively in collaborative, iterative work environments, both in academic and industry contexts.
