The Machine Learning Landscape

Estimated time: 3 hours

Read Chapter 1: The Machine Learning Landscape from Hands-On Machine Learning with Scikit-Learn, Keras & TensorFlow.

The goal is not to master every detail. Instead, use this chapter to build a mental map of machine learning: the main types of machine learning systems, common tasks, important terminology, and how the different ideas connect.

Use the three-pass method below to structure your reading.

First Pass: Get the Big Picture — 30 minutes

Skim the chapter to understand its structure and main ideas.

  • Read the What is Machine Learning? section.
  • Read all other section titles and headings.
  • Look at the figures and read their captions.
  • Read the exercise questions at the end of the chapter.

Goal: Get a quick sense of what the chapter covers and how it is organized.

Second Pass: Read for Understanding — 90 minutes

Read the chapter more carefully from start to finish.

Focus especially on concepts such as:

  • supervised vs. unsupervised learning;
  • classification vs. regression;
  • the main steps in a typical machine learning project.

If you get stuck on a concept, make a quick note and keep moving rather than spending too much time on one detail.

Goal: Understand the most important concepts and the overall machine learning landscape.

Third Pass: Targeted Review — 60 minutes

Return to the chapter and answer the exercise questions at the end.

Use the questions to identify which parts of the chapter you understand well and which sections you need to revisit.

Goal: Test and reinforce your understanding by actively retrieving and applying what you have read.
