End-to-End Machine Learning

Estimated time: 7 hours

Read Chapter 2: End-to-End Machine Learning Project from Hands-On Machine Learning with Scikit-Learn, Keras & TensorFlow.

This is a long, dense chapter containing many concepts that may be new to you. You are not expected to understand everything on the first reading.

The purpose of this chapter is to give you a big-picture view of what a complete machine learning project looks like, from framing the problem and exploring the data to preparing the data, training models, evaluating them, and preparing a system for use.

For example, you will encounter techniques such as feature scaling and methods such as fit_transform. At this stage, it is more important to understand where and why these techniques appear in the workflow than to master every technical detail.

After completing the reading, you should be able to:

  • list the main stages of a typical machine learning project;
  • explain the purpose of the major stages;
  • recognize the iterative nature of machine learning projects.

Use the three-pass method below.

First Pass: Get the Big Picture — 90 minutes

Focus on building a map of the complete project.

  • Read the Working with Real Data section.
  • Carefully read Look at the Big Picture and Frame the Problem.
  • Read all other section titles and subheadings to understand the flow of the project.
  • Look at the figures, code blocks, and output plots.
  • Read their captions.
  • Read the exercise questions at the end of the chapter.

Goal: Build a mental map of the full machine learning project lifecycle and understand the sequence of steps involved.

Second Pass: Read for Understanding — 4 hours

Read the chapter more carefully from start to finish.

Do not get stuck on individual equations, lines of code, or unfamiliar methods. Make a note of concepts that are unclear and keep moving.

Focus primarily on what is being done and why.

For example:

  • data is being explored to understand its characteristics;
  • missing values are being handled;
  • features are being transformed;
  • models are being trained;
  • models are being compared and improved.

At this stage, understanding the purpose of each step is more important than mastering every implementation detail.

Goal: Follow the narrative of the project and understand the purpose of each major step.

Third Pass: Connect Text to Code — 60 minutes

Open the official Chapter 2 notebook from the book’s GitHub repository:

https://github.com/ageron/handson-ml3/blob/main/02_end_to_end_machine_learning_project.ipynb

Open it in Colab or your preferred notebook environment.

  • Skim through the notebook.
  • Run a few cells that interest you.
  • Find examples of concepts you encountered in the chapter.
  • Connect the conceptual steps in the text to their implementation in Python.

Goal: See how the stages of an end-to-end machine learning project translate into working code.

Optional

If you want to explore the chapter further, try some of the exercises at the end.
